Hi!

Hello everyone, its Jona! Things have returned to our normal routine since my Gramms and Gramps have returned home. My mom keeps saying she misses having them around to keep her company while dad is at work and I think Gramps helped her out a lot with projects around the house. The picture above is me trying on my life vest in hopes of going on the boat! However, last weekend I ended up falling asleep in my car seat and got left on the dock with Mama Smith when everyone went out. Sneaky! My daddy keeps promising me that this weekend it will finally happen.

Here's a picture of me and mom. She keeps taking pictures of everyone else with me that she keeps forgetting to get a mom and daughter shot. So finally, Gramms took one for us. Thanks Gramms!

My mom keeps telling me this weekend that I'm gonna meet baby Finley. I'm not too sure what a Finley is but mom seems pretty excited about it so it must be something fun. Also, I'm going to see my daddy run an adventure race on Friday with my Papa Joe and Uncle David at Picnic Island. I've been told that it wont be too long before I run a race.. haha, right.

Well, mom and I are off to run some errands and then getting sushi tonight for dinner... yumm! I'm looking forward to dad getting home in the morning. I love my tummy time with him! Then its time to see my Aunt Dani, Uncle David, and Cori. I'll let you know what I figure out about this Finley thing! Bye for now.

Jona Lily's Newborn Photos!

These are the beautiful newborn photos Rebecca took of Jona at Beach Week. We love them! Rebecca got up two mornings before 6:30 to take these photos for us (although the first morning, Ryan and I slept through our alarm...whoops!) Thanks Rebecca for still getting up the second morning after we were more rested :) Did I mention how much we love the photos?!

Hello July 7th!

My, my. As promised, time has flown by! A month has come and gone and Jona has been with us now for a whole month, it almost seems impossible. Yet, as I ponder upon the little moments living happily in my memory, I realize a lot has happened in the first few weeks of her life that has filled this first month of her life so quickly. There have been quite a few big events. Birth, meeting her family members for the first time, her first shots, her first bath. The list could go on and on. But I think the best moments are the unexpected treasures that stick in my mind. The little moments I would expect to just be mundane, routine minutes that fill up the day yet these are the moments my mind circles back over time and again. I love the sweet wrinkles that fold up her forehead and her arching back as she tries to wake up in the morning, the fussiness that we can't resolve until she is lying on her daddy's chest, or the hilarious noises she makes as she serves us up a dirty diaper. How can a newborn make such a loud noise?!

This morning my mom and I took Jona to her one month check up. The pediatrician was very happy with her weight gain and growth. She's a healthy girl!
At birth... One month....
Weight: 7.8 Weight: 9.2
Head: 13 inches Head: 14.5 inches
Length: 20 inches Length: 21.5 inches

Although I'm a little sad that she will grow so quickly, I also find some solace in the fact that as she grows, there is also so much to look forward to. I can't tell you how excited Ryan is to take his little girl paddle boarding or how much I'm looking forward to her learning to crawl. So as time marches on, we carry with us a few lessoned learned from the first month of being parents. These lessons I share with you:
1. As cold air reaches Jona's butt during a diaper change, prepare for a flood!
2. A bottle of breast milk may only look like a bottle of milk, however, its also four ounces of sanity for mommy!
3. If Ryan is sleeping on the couch these days, its not because he's in the dog house. Sleepless nights at the station, nursing school and Jona have proven to have taken a toll on his restful nights.
4. Help from family and friends is worth its weight in gold!

Love to all our fellow bloggers out there and until next time...

Welcome Jona!

Ok, so I thought I would be much better about keeping the blog updated about baby business however, since Jona has arrived I haven't really thought my about blogging until now. As you all know our little baby arrived on June 7th, 2011 at 10:25 pm after many hours of laboring that honestly was more painful than any experience I had previous to delivering Jona. That is until the epidural arrived anyways. I'm just not so sure how all you ladies out there delivered a baby without any drugs!

Since three weeks has lapsed since Jona's arrival, I have started to feel a little panicky that I haven't done a better job of recording all these little moments that I hear go by so quickly. And honestly, I can see it happening before my eyes. This past Monday, Jona had a weight check at the Pediatrician's office and she has gained a pound and a half since her first visit and since that visit I swear this baby is chunking up like a Thanksgiving turkey. She eats constantly and it's starting to show :) (I love chunky babies!)

So first and foremost... delivery.

Ok, so I worked up to the very last day before Jona arrived. Now, this wasn't my original plan because I ended my school year intentionally a few days earlier than the rest of colleagues to get a few things in order before our due date rolled around. But just as I was about to crawl back in bed at 1am on June 7th, I felt a 'whoosh' of warm water that I had a sneaky suspicion what was happening. After a quick call to our OB doctor who confirmed the suspected, Ryan and I loaded up the Xterra with what we thought we needed for the next couple of days and headed to St. Joe's!

After checking in to our triage room, I was given some disappointing news about my progress. Well, just that I hadn't made any! (Meaning, I was still effaced about 50% and only dilated .5 a centimeter... I mean seriously, does that even count ?!) Our nurse reported back to us that starting at 6am my pitocin drip would start to help move things along. As for the moment, I started to realize what a bad idea it was not to eat before we left! It was 3am and I hadn't eaten since the night before and I seriously considered having Ryan sneak food into the room for me. (I'm assuming this is a big no-no, because later in the day, another patient did just that and the nurse had to retrieve our doctor from our room because she was eating... and refused to stop.. what a fatty!) Well, let me tell you, once the pitocin drip started and the contractions arrived that was the last thing on my mind! Later in the morning, my nurse offered a narcotic to help 'take the edge off' as I waited to dilate before my epidural. I was offered two choices.. the small and normal dose. I opted for the smaller dose and would have like to have seen what the full dose would have done to me! Ha.. I probably would have slept through Jona's birth. All I know is I couldn't make out any details of Ryan's face and promptly feel asleep for an hour and a half. Ryan also has video of me after I awoke that I have no recollection of and the conversation about all the foods I wanted to eat after the ordeal was over.

As the day progressed, I still hadn't! I had only dilated to 1.5 centimeters by 1pm. (Translation= that's 5 hours of pitocin and contractions with not much to show for it.) I was starting to get very nervous that the doctors would want me to opt for a cesarian delivery. My mom had to deliver by c-section and I was just really nervous about going into surgery to get Jona here.. really, that was the only thing that made me feel really anxious and scared about delivery. I just didn't want a c-section. Well, after the narcotics wore off and I came down from my high, the pitocin really started to work. The contractions were incredible. I mean, first of all, they were incredibly painful and secondly, the were starting to dilate my cervix! At last! I promptly requested an epidural after downing a bag and a half of fluids required before insertion. Pretty much, after the epidural, labor wasn't bad at all.

It still took many more hours.. 7 to be exact.. before I was fully dilated. The doctor and our nurse left the room and I kept feeling like I was going to poop the baby out as they waited for me to go from 9.5 centimeters to 10. I had a huge sense of pressure as the contractions were coming and going and I knew they needed to get back into our room before too long. Well, while we waited, Ryan had to help me turn they baby. Let me explain, the doctor had noticed about an hour earlier that Jona was lying 'sunny side up' and if she didn't turn... possible c-section! (Another c-section scare.. ugh!!). Well, I wasn't having it.. so 'doggy position' it was to get this baby to roll over. The doctor's reasoning for this, besides entertaining my husband about the awkwardness of his gigantically pregnant wife assuming a well-known sexual position, was the baby's back is heavier than any other part of her body and the position would get her to rotate. And as you can assume from the above mentioned notes about c-sections.. I was willing to try anything. So, I assumed the position (and I'm sure this moment is forever ingrained in my husband's mind.. who can blame him?!) and hoped for the best.

Well, anyways, back to pooping the baby out... I was certain Jona was coming out so I had Ryan track down our nurse to get an estimate as to what was going on. Well, low and behold, I was 10 centimeters and we were ready to push.. meaning I was ready to push.. So, our nurse has my left leg, Ryan has my right and the doctor has my.. well, you know. After our first round of pushing, Jona's head was visible, I thought I was gonna puke my brains out (and if I had had that snack I had wanted, I'm sure I would have vomited) and Ryan was so excited because he could see his little baby's head making its way to us. After four more rounds of pushing, Jona's head crowned, her little shoulders came out and then I had a newborn baby on my chest! Of all the special moments in my life, this one takes the cake. It was really a beautiful moment meeting our beautiful baby girl!

Well, that's it for now. I will definitely add more to the blog much sooner than I have previously. I mean honestly, I'm not working! Hope this all finds you well :)

A few more photos...

Some of my best friends from home thought it would be a great idea to gather everyone up this past spring as sort of a reunion. So in March, we all packed up a rental van, headed north to the panhandle and reunited with some of our oldest friends. While we were in the area Ryan and I also scored some amazing maternity photos with a friend I rode horses with. Laura started her own business a few years ago shortly after she had her first baby and fell in love with photography. We were lucky enough that she could squeeze us into her schedule and had a fun time taking these beautiful photos. I'm excited to finally share!

Baby, Baby, Baby!

This weekend was truly a weekend of Baby! Ry and I decided to get the 3D/4D Sonogram done somewhere around 30 weeks which landed on this Saturday. We were debating a bit about wether or not to get the sonogram done because it isn't cheap but we decided we wanted one last peek before the big day. So on Saturday we gathered up a few of our favorite people and headed to 'Meet the Baby'. During the sonogram I was getting a little nervous about paying for this extra commercialized baby activity because Jona would not turn over or show up her face! I honestly think the first half hour the tech was telling her 'come on baby, turn over'. I literally heard that 40 times during the session! But as soon as I turned over on my right side and Ryan started talking to her she flipped right on over! Guess she's a daddy's girl already :) After flipping over, I thought the images were still a little jumbled and wasn't really sure if I was going to like how the photos turned out but after reviewing them last night we are really happy with the photo results. I know we will always cherish them and I'm really happy we decided to have the 3D/4D sonogram after all.

Soon after the conclusion of our appointment, we headed to BabiesRUs for a little baby shopping with Pappy and Yaya. (Ryan's parent's still don't really have their coined grandparent names, so I just refer to them as such). The guys were kind of ok sports about being at that store but YaYa and I had fun!

Once we finally made it home to S.Tampa to grab a bite to eat and relax it was time to head out the hospital tour of St. Joseph's Women's Hospital! I was pretty excited to get over there to see what this labor/ delivery set up was all about. Shortly after our tour began we realized the nurse conducting the tour belonged to Disney and somehow ended up here at the hospital. Ryan was laughing at this poor woman the entire tour. At least he wasn't the only dad cracking up! I just hope she isn't my nurse the day of delivery! I don't know how I would handle her automated responses during delivery! (I actually recorded a few things she said during the tour.. so ask me about it when you see me next). It was nice to see where we will be delivering and the routine of checking in, etc. It made the D-day a little less imminent, at least for now :)

Well, I hope you all are doing well and enjoying your spring. My hope is that all parts of the country are warming up for you all. I know Tampa is beautiful right now and we are enjoying the weather while its still cool. Love to you all!
